Advanced Command and Staff Course - ACSC

Overview

Introduction

The ACSC is a 46-week residential course run at the Joint Services Command and Staff College at the Defence Academy.  The course provides professional education covering a wide spectrum of military defence and security issues for a select cadre of UK and international military and civilian officers.

Aim

The aim of the Advanced Command Staff Course (ACSC) is to prepare selected military and civilian officers for senior positions in defence. Developing a student’s analytical decision-making, communication skills; broadening their MOD professional knowledge of a wide spectrum of military, political and current international affairs.

The course is primarily designed for OF3/4 Royal Navy, Royal Marines, British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Fleet Auxiliary military officers.  Applications are also invited from B2/C1 (G7/SEO) civil servants who want to study in an integrated military/civilian setting to gain a greater appreciation of the defence and security environment in which we operate. 

This course is likely to be of particular interest to those looking to pursue a career in International/Operational Policy and Strategy and work alongside their military counterparts in multinational environments.

Course Elements

The ACSC is divided into 2 Phases covering the 3 areas of the Defence Functional Framework: ENDS, WAYS, and MEANS.

Phase 1
– A 34-week Core Phase which is undertaken by all students and provides broad, generalist professional education.  It examines:

  • The factors which shape the international system and how these affect the UK security context (ENDs)
  • The use of military capability for engagement and across the full spectrum of conflict in single Service, joint, combined and multi-agency environments (WAYs)
  • The principles that govern the Higher Management of Defence in balancing policy, capability and resource (MEANs)
  • The characteristics of Command, Leadership and Management in all relevant contexts and environments 

Phase 2 - An 8-week Module Phase which allows students to select from a choice of three Modules covering ENDs, WAYS and MEANs to study in greater depth.

Elements of the full course are also available as standalone short courses.


Accreditation / Assessments

The ACSC syllabus is accredited to postgraduate standard by Kings College London (KCL).

Further Course Information

The course is delivered through a series of lectures from senior military and civil servants, academics, diplomats and practitioners who are highly regarded within their field.  Central lectures are explored in more depth through Syndicate Room Discussions facilitated by academic and military staff.  Academic study is complemented by workshops, practical exercises and visits to single Service locations and overseas.
