Courses
Introduction to Information Services
Duration: 3 weeks
Introduces technical staff officers to the principles of Information Services. It will enable students to contribute to the development of IS strategy, understand how IS resources should be managed, understand IS development methodologies and the principles of Service Management.
Systems Analysis
Duration: 2 weeks
To enable technical staff officers to conduct an analysis of an existing system and to provide an understanding of how future systems might be modelled using accepted modelling techniques.
Data Communications
Duration: 2 weeks
To enable technical staff officers working in a CIS environment to assess the effectiveness of data communications technologies used in current and future Information Management and Command and Control systems as deployed in the Operational Space.
Service Management
Duration: 1 week
To enable technical staff officers to understand the concepts, features and techniques of the Service Delivery and Service Support disciplines and their impact in the management of any MoD IT service.
Software Management
Duration: 1 week
To provide technical staff officers with an understanding of Software Engineering principles including software lifecycle models, the principles of requirements capture and system design methodologies.
Data Management
Duration: 1 week
To enable technical staff officers to compare and contrast simple data storage structures, database management options and introduces the principles of data manipulation through the use of SQL.
Information Management
Duration: 1 week
To provide technical staff officers with an understanding of the people, process and technology issues that impact Information Management in a Networked Information Environment.
Qualifications & Accreditation
Accreditation for IS ET courses has been sought from the British Computer Society’s Information Systems Examination Board (ISEB) and from Cranfield University as part of a future IS modular masters degree.
Introduction to Information Services, Systems Analysis and Service Management will attract an ISEB award.
Introduction to Information Services will attract up to 15 Credits towards a modular masters degree.

Programme
Aim
To prepare selected Army officers for Grade 2 technical staff appointments
End State
An officer with the knowledge and practical skills to be successful and competitive in Information Services posts across MoD.
- The Defence Academy will co-ordinate the delivery of a suite of short Information Services Employment Training courses. IS ET builds upon ICSC(L)’s introduction to the principles of IS and Command and Battlespace Management. It aims to develop further the skills, knowledge and understanding required by an IS practitioner across a range of specific IS disciplines.
- IS ET is also designed to update officers returning to the technical staff for a subsequent posting in the IS area.
- The courses will be delivered by academic and military staff at the Defence Academy and the Defence College of Communication and Information Services (Blandford).
