In his opening comments, the Director of Information Services Mr. Stephen Town said that "in the design and presentation of both the building and the portal, we have tried to achieve the necessary mix of services, collections and staff in an effective way, and with a certain style and quality that maintains the image of the library as an academic symbol."

Before he cut the actual and virtual ribbons, Rear Admiral Latham observed that this "wonderful library" was now rightly established at the heart of the campus and as a result believed we would see many customers through the door.
