58 Degree

58 Degree the last cohort of Military undergraduates to study for a first degree at Cranfield University, Shrivenham.

They certainly went out with a flourish - 62 in all with total of 11 First Class Honours obtained and no failures!

58 Degree suffered slightly from the the Defence Technical Undergraduate Training Scheme changes.  Unlike their more fortunate (and perhaps academically blessed) colleagues who departed Welbeck in 2003 they were not given the opportunity to proceed to one of the civilian universities affiliated to the Scheme.  They were always very much aware that the tradition of undergraduates at Shrivenham was in its dying days, a has-been breed, nevertheless their performance across the board drew praise.  Aside from working hard and enduring numerous accommodation inspections from the Officer Commanding in addition many of them pursued numerous extra curricular commitments.  Many played sport to a very high level including activities such as Army Rugby, Army climbing and Army Triathlon.  One even won the Army Angling Competition, most non anglers not knowing there was such a thing!

58 Degree raised over 5K for charity during their tenure through a whole range of initiatives including such events as running the New York Marathon and packing bags at Sainsburys.  They were certainly a colourful lot, a week in the life of the undergraduates was never dull.  Microwaves spontaneously combusting, motor bikes being wrapped around trees (no permanent damaged sustained to tree or person - thank goodness), Nigel Mansell impressions in hire cars, the list is endless.  They had fun, remained focussed despite the drawbacks of being a student living in Watchfield and got on with the job.

In spite of the searing heat in the Graduation tent the day itself was very successful with many parents 'basking' in the glory of their child's achievements.  We wish them well in their future military careers.
