DSD has an established international reputation for teaching and research in the historical and contemporary dimensions of war, defence and international affairs.

The Department aims to enhance understanding of defence and international issues through the provision of a programme of study informed by research. Through this DSD contributes to the reputation of the JSCSC as a world-class centre of excellence.

DSD’s teaching seeks to develop academic credibility and partnership with the military by encompassing the following:

• Provision to students of core material on defence and international affairs
• The opportunity to specialise in selected aspects of defence
• The development of a critical and independent approach to the study of defence issues
• Development of a curriculum supported by staff research.
