The D-Day Landings
Operation Overlord commenced with the assault by British and American airborne forces on the night of 5/6 June 1944.
The British 6th Airborne Division successfully carried out out its tasks in Operation 'Tonga', but British and Commonwealth forces on Gold, Juno, and Sword beaches were unable to meet the ambitious D-Day targets set by Montgomery for the day of 6 June.
