Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Air) visit France
From 7 to 9 Sep 09, 62 students and 10 directing staff of No 308 ICSC(Air) visited the memorials and battlefields of the Pas de Calais region of northern France.
The aim of the Exercise was to educate the students on the history and ethos of the RAF by the use of historical settings to illustrate the development of air power. The Pas de Calais area was well-suited to the aim, as it was in that region that British air power 'came of age' and the RAF was formed.
Students led a number of 'stands' where they sought to draw out the lessons of past campaigns and applied their meaning to the modern operational context. Subjects included: the critical roles of the RFC during the Battle of the Somme and their relevance to contemporary operations; the capture of Vimy Ridge and the role of air-land integration; and the controversial issue of whether the RAF achieved control of the air in the evacuation of Dunkirk.
