NATO Building Integrity in Defence Establishments Conference 6-7 July 09
Corruption is a major challenge in many security sectors. The prevention and cure of corruption has been a significant project in NATO for the last 18 months.
On the 6th and 7th July, the Defence Academy hosted the biannual NATO Summer Review for the Building Integrity in Defence Establishments (BIDE) initiative. The review was attended by over 20 participants from the armed forces, MoD, FCO, and NGO community. The countries represented were the UK, US, Sweden, Germany, the Ukraine, Switzerland, Macedonia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Afghanistan.
Over the two days, the participants reviewed the considerable success of the initiative since its launch in April 2008. The BIDE foundation course, working to tackle corruption, has now been run in the Ukraine, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Afghanistan and the UK. There are plans to run three short courses in the Afghan Ministry of Defence and Ministry of the Interior, using a mobile training team led by the UK Defence Academy. The Director-General held a formal dinner in honour of BIDE which was attended by Sir Ian Andrews, former 2nd PUS; Major-General Poynder, Afghan Officer and member of RCDS; and Mr Mark Pyman, Chairman of Transparency International.
