Project Barrington - Campus Development

An update on Campus Development within the Defence Academy

Phase 1 Complete

All four buildings from Phase 1 of Project Barrington are now fully in service.

The refurbished Beckett House and its new 50 room single living accommodation block were officially opened by Chief of the Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup on 12 January.  The building has been transformed from the DCMT/Cranfield Library to a fully functioning management centre without detriment to, and where possible enhancing, the Grade 2* listed building.

These pictures show the change:

The work was undertaken in close co-operation with the Vale of White Horse Listed Building Officer who was consulted about every item fixed to the walls.

The  accommodation block provides 50 en-suite study bedrooms with three of these being sized and fitted out for people with disabilities.  The two buildings are joined by a glazed link and the whole complex will soon be included within the extended security fence.

McKay House

These two buildings complete Phase 1 of Project Barrington alongside the refurbished Sergeants' Mess and their new accomodation block which was formally named McKay House in a ceremony on 15th May 2007.  The building was named after Sergeant Ian John McKay VC with his mother Mrs Freda McKay unveiling a plaque in the building's foyer.

Phase 2 - In Progress

The first building of Phase 2, the Defence Capability Centre (DCC) completed construction in November followed by several months of fit-out.  The centre opened for business on 1st April.

The building (above) is over 100m long and has a main demonstration hall to house large military hardware with the teaching and office areas on two floors at the front of the building.  These areas are built as re-configurable spaces with folding walls and flood wiring beneath a full access raised floor.  To date the facilities have been well used by a variety of courses/events.

The next two buildings to complete are the first of the 230 bed Officers single living accomodation blocks and the 260 seat lecture theatre.  These buildings are on programme to be complete by December and ready for occupation in January 2008.  The accomodation block has 77 two-room suites plus en-suite with the remainder being single rooms with en-suite.  Each floor has four utility rooms, two bathrooms and a baggage store.  As can be seen from the aerial photograph below there is a central enclosed courtyard that will have a mixture of hard and soft landscaping and seating.

Lecture theatre

The building in the centre of the photograph will house the new lecture theatre whilst to the right is the site for the second 230 bed Officers accomodation which will be ready for occuptation in January 2009.

The lecture theatre with a capacity of 260 is sized to accommodate a single course of ICSC(L) who will be the primary users and they will occupy a refurbished Roberts Hall (top right in the photograph) in January 2009.  This central building will also operate as the reception for both Roberts and Kitchener Hall messes together with the Academy HQ when it moves into Burgoyne House following its refurbishment as part of Phase 3.

Infrastructure work has progressed at the same time as the buildings with one car park and a new road complete with a second car park due for completion in September 2007.  These works will allow the closure of Barrington Avenue between Roberts and Kitchener Halls to create a pedestrian area with access for service vehicles and emergency services only.

Phase 3 - Planning

As part of defining the requirement of Phase 3 the Academy is undertaking an update of the Campus Development Plan looking at our needs over the next 5 to 10 years.  The study is due to report its initial findings in July with the main report in August and will inform the projects to be included in Phase 3.  Currently there are identified requirements for a new Sports Hall, a new Medical/Dental Centre and a centralised Logistics Centre.  Refurbishment of Burgoyne House and Kitchener Hall are also included in the original scope of Phase 3 and this will be validated as part of the study.

Non-Barrington Projects

The extension to the Development Concept & Doctrine Centre completed on schedule in December 2006 with the staff being in before Christmas leave and an official opening by the Armed Forces Minister, Adam Ingram on 25 January 2007.

Part of Wellington Hall has been refurbished to house Defence School of Finance & Management who have moved onto Shrivenham from Worthy Down and have been incorporated into the Defence Leadership and Management Centre.

The Junior Ranks Mess has been established in the vacated and refurbished Sergeants Mess, releasing room to provide a much needed expansion of the cardio-vascular gym in Burgoyne House, its temporary home until the new Sports Centre is built.

The old Soils Laboratory (Building 64) is currently being refurbished in preparation for the relocation of the Cranfield University workshops from Armstrong Laboratory (Building 77) this summer.  This vacated space will then form part of the wider DCC development.in January 2009.
