Typhoon Chiefs vs Cosford Lions

last modified 2012-05-10 13:06

The last game of the season for Cosford Lions against Typhoon Chiefs

With only a few minutes on the clock, OCdt “Twinkle toes, side step, where did that try come from?” Gordon powered his way over Cosford Lions try line.  His show of strength and agility put him over on the left hand touch line making OCdt Reeve’s conversion attempt even more different that it already was in the driving rain.  Unfortunately it went wide, Typhoon were ready to receive the restart.  A well contested match ensued with Cosford only managing a penalty kick to bring the score to 5 to 3 at half time.  By now Mid “Am I really bleeding and got broken ribs?” Smith had to be replaced by an invitational player, Sgt Chris McGarry, who despite being almost twice the age of most of our players put in a strong appearance although took a little while to adjust to life in the forwards.  Not only had the Flt Cdr managed to secure Chris as a sub, he took an impromptu stop on the M6 to try and recruit couple of traffic police to the team.

The second half kicked off with Typhoon beginning to gel with rucking, mauling and handling skills increasing.  The Cosford Lions head coach commented that,”…if this is only their second game of the season, imagine how good they’d be had they been training”. About 60 minutes in saw some excellent ball retention, the ball being driven forward and well placed supporting runners.  The continuing rain severely affected the game by reducing the ball’s grip to that of a well lubricated bar of soap.  Despite this, Typhoon maintained their attack and several individual attacking runs saw the Lion’s defence cut through although none of this advantage could be turned to points.  The final whistle drew the game, the score remaining 5 points to 3, to a close with Cosford surprised by their opposition as they usually have the fitness advantage in the last 20 minutes.

The Man of the Match was awarded to OCdt “Been to Twickenham” Reeve for his control of the game, positional play and streaks of brilliance and this award was quickly followed by him also winning the Dick of the Match for blatant showboating that didn’t quite pay off.

We now look forward to our first match of next season on 3 Oct back at Cosford.
