Summative Assessment Instructions
As part of the SA you will tick a box to confirm you have read and understood these instructions. YOU SHOULD READ THEM AS IT WILL STOP THE FOLLOWING:
- Completing an assessment twice after passing it the first time.
- Not understanding the pass procedure and certification process.
- Calling the wrong help desk and not receiving the correct support.
Policy & Pass Mark
The policy for MK assessments is in the Officer Career Development Handbook (OCDH). However, recent changes to policy regarding Invigilation will not be published until later this year although they are now effective.
Each summative assessment is designed to test that students have achieved the stated learning outcomes for each module. The pass mark for each assessment is 70% and students are required to pass all summative assessments in order to pass the course. Once you submit the assessment for marking you will be awarded a pass or fail. The FAQs state which modules are assessed.
The summative assessments are not easy; students are often surprised by the level of knowledge required to achieve the pass mark. Students are unlikely to pass unless they have completed and revised thoroughly all the lessons in the module.
If you pass a SA and then you look at the DLP and it shows either Failed or In Progress don’t worry. This is a known issue and a BT script runs every 4 hours and will update your DLP record. This script will run at 12, 4 and 8 o’clock and by a quarter past the hour will be completed. If after this time you still have a problem please call the MK help desk. DO NOT TAKE THE ASSESSMENT AGAIN IT IS NOT REQUIRED.
Assessment Procedure
The assessments are no longer required to be invigilated and can therefore be completed as ‘open book’. However, they must be all your own effort; you cannot be helped during the exam by anyone else. Although open book, each question is time limited so a thorough knowledge of the subject matter is required. The summative assessment timer is located in the bottom right hand corner of the questions view. Students have approximately 45 seconds per question. The assessment must be completed in one sitting. If a student doesn’t complete the assessment in the allocated time the assessment will automatically be submitted for marking. In the event of a lost connection the assessment will also be submitted for marking when the time runs out however answered questions will not be recorded.
Failure Procedure
The following procedure is not a guideline, it is policy as laid down in the OCDH by DTrg (A) and must be applied by all students:
A student who fails a Summative Assessment should not re-attempt that assessment until the next working day. This delay is to enable the student to conduct any necessary revision. It tells you how to re-enrol on the assessment if you fail it at the end.
If a student fails the same assessment three times, he or she must consult their mentor or line manager prior to making any further attempt. The student is advised to contact the MK help desk to identify key areas of weakness. It is advisable that the mentor then establishes a remedial programme with the student and monitors progress.
Assessment Result
The completed assessment will move to your Completed Activities folder in My Learning. If you have registered a military email address in your DLP profile you should be notified by email of your SA pass result by the DLP.
The Military Knowledge Office (MKO) maintains a record of all MK module passes. The MKO download results on Monday and Friday each week, when a student passes their final module/the course. The MKO update the student's JPA competence to show completion of the course and send a confirmatory email to the student with a certificate of completion attached for printing.
Students are advised to contact the MK help desk to confirm we still hold their correct Email address once they have successfully completed the last module of the course, if you think they may have changed since registration.
