Dagestan: Local hostility to Botlikh Military Township and anger over Gimry Tunnel closure

(12/01 Charles W Blandy) The concept of a military township at Botlikh, reminiscent of the Caucasus Fortified Lines of the 18th and 19th Centuries, was resurrected following the Chechen ‘invasion’ into Dagestan in August 1999. Resultant land expropriation and intermittent closure of Gimry tunnel harmed the interests of people in Mountainous Dagestan.
