About this course

The CYIP course aims to introduce the concepts of Defensive Cyber Operations, providing a more-advanced level of knowledge and expertise built upon the Cyber Network Fundamentals course and a period of consolidation. It is a fast-paced course which takes an incident-management approach and will develop your ability to identify and mitigate the impact of a range of cyber-attack methods both theoretically and practically. 

What you will learn

You will learn:
  • the nature of cyber-attacks, including DOD/DDOS, SQL Injection and Cross-Site Scripting
  • the investigation of networking anomalies using a variety of open-source and other tools
  • the basics of network forensics
  • rule-writing basics using Snort and SourceFire

You should consider this course if you are in a role where understanding the underlying theory of cyber-attacks and defending against them is important, and you are actively involved in protecting or defending networks against cyber threats.

Before you attend

There are no formal pre-requisites for this course; however you are required to demonstrate a level of understanding of cyber networking at least equal to that taught on the CYNF course, and a period of consolidation of those skills.

This course is suitable for the following type(s) of applicant.
  • Military
  • MOD Civil Servants
  • Other government departments (OGDs)
Due to the nature of this course, it is only available to UK, US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand nationals who hold at least an SC level of clearance and are Military or Civil Service (not necessarily Defence) employees.

You will be formatively assessed by a range of methods, both theoretical and practical, and be required to pass a formal end-of-course assessment.
