About this course

This course will provide you with an introduction to data science tools and techniques. Presenters are Dstl subject matter experts who will guide you through a series of hands on exercises to develop skills in areas such as big data, machine learning, data wrangling, visual and text analytics and other data science techniques applicable to MOD.

What you will learn

Learning objectives for the Data Academy are as follows:
  • gain a broad awareness of data science tools and techniques
  • gain experience of using specific tools within each topic area
  • understand the suitability and limitations of specific techniques
  • understand ethical and policy constraints to applying data science


How will this course help my career?

The Data Academy aims to provide you with data science upskilling, develop your understanding of data science and introduce a broad range of data science tools and techniques. The use of Dstl subject matter experts, supplemented with wider industry guest speakers, draws expertise from across the data science community. The Data Academy provides a networking opportunity with speakers and colleagues from across Defence who have similar areas of interest, providing you the opportunity to share experiences and solutions.

Before you attend

Before you attend the course, you will need to:
  • have some strengths in one of the following areas maths, statistics, computer programming, visualisation or systems skills
  • have at least a basic scripting or coding ability (for example, in Python or similar)
  • have a basic knowledge of statistics
  • have a committed desire to develop your data science skills further
  • be available for the planned course dates
Attendees who do not have strong coding skills are recommended to undertake pre-learning, such as Google’s Python Class: or Data Camp’s Intro to Python for Data Science:

Can I attend this course?

This course is suitable for the following type(s) of applicant.
  • Military
  • MOD Civil Servants
  • Partners Across Government (PAG)
  • A basic understanding of maths, statistics and coding is a prerequisite.
  • Attendees require a minimum of SC security clearance, in order to access Dstl Corporate ICT equipment.
  • Non-UK nationals will be assessed on a case by case basis. There may be a need to exclude certain nationalities from specific case study presentations, or from accessing Dstl Corporate ICT equipment.
