About this course

This course is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of Shrivenham Leadership Centre, Defence Academy.

This course has one intake per year: Sun 10 Jan 21.

This course will focus on self-awareness, and the impact of your behaviours on staff and team relationships.  It introduces leadership models and theories including the tools and techniques available to motivate and lead staff.  Finally exploring the defence operating environment and examines the challenges it brings with a debate on strategies to meet these challenges, including change and resilience.

Keeping courses up-to-date and current requires constant innovation and change. The modules currently offered in connection with this MSc reflect the needs of our business however they may change or be withdrawn due to research developments, legislation changes or for a variety of other reasons, depending on the year of entry. Changes may also be designed to improve the student learning experience or to respond to feedback from students, external examiners, accreditation bodies and industrial advisory panels.

What you will learn

Upon completion of the MSc you will be able to:
  • demonstrate a broad understanding of the variety of approaches to leadership
  • be aware of and develop a critical understanding of the nature of your own leadership
  • describe the causes of leadership success and failure
  • plan and lead successful organisational change
  • have the practical knowledge and skills to be able to analyse widely different contexts and situation
  • develop leadership in others
  • develop a critical analysis of contemporary leadership theory and practice
  • have the knowledge and skills to understand and shape the development of leadership in war, conflict and crisis situations
  • design and conduct a research project to address pertinent organisational issues in leadership studies
  • develop an area of specialisation through the conduct of an in-depth investigation
  • critically appraise and apply leadership studies ideas, theories and concepts to a specific organisational context
  • develop a critical analysis of the research methods and philosophies that underpin leadership studies

How will this course help my career?

This qualification will take you on to a thorough understanding of defence leadership in its widest setting, within and beyond the defence sector, in theory and in practice. Attendance on this course will help and encourage your transition from manager to leader.

Before you attend

In order to attend the course, you are expected to have a 1st or 2nd class honours degree in an appropriate discipline, or equivalent. You may also qualify for enrolment if you have a 3rd class honours or an ordinary degree with three or five years respectively of suitable postgraduate experience. 

If English is not your native language, you must attain an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 overall.

If you are seeking a Ministry of Defence (MOD) funded place, you will need to demonstrate in your application that there is a clear business need to undertake the course.
