Defence Strategic Cyber Awareness - DSCAC

Technology School
1 day

About this course

The 2015 National Security Strategy highlighted three key threats to the UK – Russia, ISIS and Cyber. In recognition of the level of threat posed by cyber activity, the launch of the 2016-2021 National Cyber Security Strategy, and supporting £1.9B budget, demonstrates a step change in the approach to be taken across government in providing a comprehensive plan to make Britain increasingly resilient in the fast moving digital world. As highlighted in 2016 by both Secretary of State for Defence and the Chancellor, the Ministry of Defence will play a pivotal role in this plan.

This is a one-day strategic masterclass. Run by the Defence Cyber School, it is aimed at 1*/2* military officers, senior civil servants and senior leaders from our industry partners. The seminar will help delegates understand the importance of cyber in effective leadership and enable them to identify and describe the risks and opportunities affecting them, their organisations and their personnel presented through cyber activity.

Cyber security can no longer be the domain of the IT team, awareness and action must start at the board level. This seminar aims to provide an awareness of what cyber means to defence and its industry partners to senior leaders at this strategic level. Guiding leaders through the threat landscape and actions being taken by UK government to protect ourselves from the risks, delegates will be better placed to understand the strategic impact of cyber activity in general and in this specialist area of Information Warfare.

What you will learn

You will gain an awareness of:
  • the importance of cyber as an integral part of effective command, control and leadership
  • the breadth of cyber risks and opportunities which affect them, their organisations and their personnel
  • the need to provide direction and to promote development of their personnel on appropriate cyber conduct and awareness
  • organisations, departments and training & education that can help protect their organisation and personnel from cyber threats
  • potential opportunities due to increased knowledge of cyber

How will this course help my career?

The benefits to you are drawn from the breadth of material and presenters used throughout the day long seminar, developing a broad understanding of the impact of cyber at a strategic level. The use of guest speakers draws expertise from across the domain, increasing the educational value to attendees. The in-course discussion offers you the opportunity to personalise your learning experience making the content relevant to your own roles and organisations. Beyond the classroom, the networking opportunities with industry partners, guest speakers and others within our own organisation exploring the same areas of interest provide opportunities to further enhance understanding regarding the impact of cyber and our response to this high level threat.

Extending attendance to our industry partners facilitates bilateral information sharing that can help improve the security of all parties whilst providing a unique insight to the approach defence is taking to help deter attackers from targeting the UK, defending our cyber borders when they do and developing the skills needed to help make the UK secure and resilient in the face of the cyber threat. Industry attendees, in particular, will value the time spent networking with our senior leaders in small cohorts allowing more one to one conversations.
