About this course

This short course is a module from the Defence Simulation and Modelling MSc. It is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of the Technology School, Defence Academy.

This course introduces you to the main ways in which defence simulation systems make use of networking technology.  The structure comprises of a mixture of classroom instruction and hands-on practical work and examples utilising the applications, LANs and WANs available in the Defence Academy Simulation and Synthetic Environment Laboratory (SSEL).


It also introduces you to the interoperability issues and processes surrounding your employment in building defence synthetic environments.

What you will learn

On successful completion of the course, you will understand:
  • basic operation of LANs and WANs and the hardware involved, sufficient for simulation interoperability purposes
  • network protocols and standards (e.g. Ethernet, TCP/IP)
  • simulation network architectures
  • simulation network protocols – especially DIS and HLA
  • the principles, terminology and challenges of Simulation Interoperability
  • workflow and processes for designing and building distributed and federated solutions (e.g. DSEEP)
  • issues in the configuration of distributed and federated simulation applications
