About this course

The course consists of hands-on practical activities and workshops to reinforce lecture presentations by allowing you to use real examples against set analysis problems. There will  be guest speakers from industry and defence (MOD) who share and discuss their experiences of wargaming and combat modelling in practical applications.

The course includes:
  • the applications of war games and combat models
  • how they are used within these applications
  • the characteristics and strengths and weaknesses of the different types
It covers many of the methods used in the modelling of combat and their application in support of key decisions and in the training of military and civilian personnel.

What you will learn

On completion you will be able to:
  • critically appraise the full range of war games and combat simulations and apply them to defence problem
  • use the deterministic and stochastic Lanchester equations to represent combat between both homogeneous and heterogeneous forces
  • use interactive computer based representations of military operations
  • explain how the different methods of representing the operations of military forces are used in the training, testing and assessment of those forces and their equipment

How will this course help my career?

This course is a module as part of the Defence Simulation and Modelling MSc. This course is unique in Defence, providing expertise in a vital and fast changing area of technology.

Before you attend

No formal requirement.  Cranfield’s regulations apply to MSc/PgDip/PgCert enrolment.

If you are seeking a Ministry of Defence (MOD) funded place, you will need to demonstrate in your application that there is a clear business need to undertake the course.
