The course considers how defence-related activities can influence the quality of the environment and considers environmental protection within defence procurement, including environmental compliance. It also introduces you to relevant environmental legislation and environmental management systems such as ISO14001, life cycle assessment and the MOD Project Orientated Environmental Management Systems (POEMS).
The course focuses on key relevant topic, such as emissions to air, land and water, as well as the mandatory requirements for compliance in defence. Through introducing basic environmental science and law, this course aids environmental management within defence acquisition.
This course will enable you to:
- summarise the underlying concepts and principles associated with environmental protection
- explain how MOD activities impact on the environment, both positively and negatively
- identify relevant environmental legislation and compliance measures at the global and local level
- summarise the eight steps of the Project Oriented Environmental Management System (POEMS)
This course will raise your awareness of environmental issues,
with a primary focus within the defence sector and the acquisition process for
environmental managers and officers.
The course aims to assist you with the skills, knowledge and
development potential to understand and manage environmental problems at the
practical level. You will be introduced to aspects of environmental legislation
and the mandatory requirements for formal compliance in defence.
Completion of this
course, along with the Sustainable Development in Defence Acquisition course,
will enable you to progress to the Project Oriented Environmental Management
Systems course. Upon successful completion of all three courses, you will meet
the MOD’s system environmental functional competencies at practitioner level
and qualify for IEMA practitioner membership
