About this course

This short course is a module from the Explosive Ordnance Engineering (EOE) MSc. It is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of the Technology School, Defence Academy.

This course is suitable for you if you are involved with research, design, manufacture or procurement of munitions and you wish an appreciation of design principles and practice.

The core content of this course is around:
  • guns and mortars; build-up, charge systems, cartridge case design, alternative gun propulsion systems, external ballistics
  • torpedoes; underwater ballistics, underwater propulsion, guidance and control
  • air stores; air carriage and release, sub-munition dispensing
  • sensing and communication; acoustic and seismic sensing, IR and optical sensing
  • safety and arming, fusing
  • ordnance systems integration

What you will learn

You will learn/develop:
  • understand the principles for the build up of conventional guns and mortars and alternative novel gun propulsion systems
  • understand the principles of external ballistics of spin and fin stabilised ammunition both in air and underwater
  • understand the design principles of fixed and separated ammunition, cartridge cases and combustible cases, igniters and methods of extending the range of gun launched projectiles
  • understand the principals of safety and arming and weapons fusing
  • identify the methods of carriage and release of air delivered ordnance and to appreciate the principles of operation of smart carrier shell
  • examine torpedo design including propulsion and guidance and control subsystems
  • describe the characteristics of free flight rockets such as air delivered and artillery rocket systems and the principles of recoilless guns and ammunition

How will this course help my career?

You will be able to perform detailed calculations related to the performance (i.e. range and velocity) of complete guided weapon and torpedo designs using informed aerodynamic, propulsion and mass data.

Before you attend

Completion of the Introduction to Explosives course.

If you are seeking a Ministry of Defence (MOD) funded place, you will need to demonstrate in your application that there is a clear business need to undertake the course.
