About this course

This short course is a module from the Explosive Ordnance Engineering (EOE) MSc. It is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of the Technology School, Defence Academy.

This course will provide you with a wide understanding of explosives and their effects.

What you will learn

You will learn to :
  • understand the principles, manufacture, initiation and effects of primary and secondary explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics and their application in commercial and military environments
  • be familiar with current ammunition
  • appreciate the importance of safety, legislation, reliability, testing, storage and environmental impact of explosives
  • have the knowledge to analyse the theories of thermodynamics of explosive reactions and perform calculations for enthalpy, free energy and gas equilibria
  • be able to identify the mechanisms for initiation and appreciate the differences between deflagration and detonation and the classification of explosives
