About this course

This short course is a module from the Explosive Ordnance Engineering (EOE) MSc. It is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of the Technology School, Defence Academy.

The emphasis is on the effects of explosive and ballistic loading, including fragments, on a wide range of targets including personnel, structures and armour systems. The course also aims to provide you  with  an understanding of the means of attacking and defeating the main targets presented to land, sea and air forces.

What you will learn

You will learn to:
  • assess the ammunition or warhead selection for the attack of personnel, aircraft, ships, armour and structures
  • establish the principles of warhead design for fragmentation. 
  • appraise the design and performance of shaped charges and penetrators
  • justify fuse selection for warhead functioning
  • understand the principles in designing appropriate armour design and concepts for specific threats
  • understand and apply the principles in determining the appropriate use of steels, aluminium alloys, titanium alloys, ceramics composites, concrete and geological materials in protective design

This course will help you if you are involved with research, design, manufacture or procurement of munitions and you wish to have an appreciation of design principles and practice.

Before you attend

You will either have an honours degree or equivalent in an appropriate technical discipline, or a lesser qualification where you  will have relevant professional experience.

If you are seeking a Ministry of Defence (MOD) funded place, you will need to demonstrate in your application that there is a clear business need to undertake the course.
