About this course

This short course is a module from the Explosive Ordnance Engineering (EOE) MSc. It is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of the Technology School, Defence Academy.

This is a truly unique course that draws upon the knowledge skills and experience of world leading academics and industry experts. 

The main focus of the course is explosive safety and how this can be enhanced. Primarily focusing on civilian Health and Safety legislation, and how these can dove tail into military regulations and protocols. Your knowledge will be enhanced by syndicate group activities which focuses on work associated with specific programmes that support the recognition of threats and failure modes.  These in turn naturally lead to the development and completion of Safety Assessments that are in line with industry and theoretical protocols, culminating with the peer review of the safety assessments.

What you will learn

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:
  • describe the evolution and importance of regulations and legal context for explosive safety;
  • design a suite of metrics for a safety programme;
  • produce a proactive safety protocol for an EOE activity;
  • critique or defend safety procedures for EOE activities.

How will this course help my career?

Attending this module will equip you with the appropriate skills to be able understand the legislative constraints of explosives and energetic materials and provide advice on explosive safety. You will be able to identify the initial metrics for a safety programme, leading to the development safety protocols that have been peer reviewed. 

Concurrently this is world class Continuous Professional Development, the 10 points from this module can count towards the EOE Masters awarded through Cranfield University.  Longer term it can lead towards becoming a Chartered Engineer through the Institute of Explosive Engineers.

There are no prerequisites if taken as a standalone Short Course.

If you wish to take the assessment associated with this course, you must have successfully completed the Introduction to Explosives Engineering course or have relevant experience.
