About this course

The course content is divided between traditional lectures, chemistry and materials laboratory sessions and explosives processing facilities

The course elements are:
  • Chemistry of the Synthesis of Explosive Molecules including basic chemistry of nitration; synthesis examples of LA/LS, TNT, RDX, NC, NG; basic stability/ compatibility (to be extended in testing module)
  • Material Science of Explosive Materials including basic hazard/performance properties; crystal properties; binder properties; mechanical properties; damage mechanism, vibration, shock
  • Engineering of the Manufacture of Explosives & Propellants including filling processes of explosive & propellants; plant design, safety quality control

What you will learn

You will learn/develop:
  • an understanding of the principals involved in the introduction of nitro groups into molecules
  • an awareness of the current manufacturing processes for common primary, secondary explosives and the current manufacturing processes for gun propellants and rocket propellant grains
  • an understanding of the principles of ordnance

Before you attend

You should have a HNC/degree in science or engineering or suitable experience.

If you are seeking a Ministry of Defence (MOD) funded place, you will need to demonstrate in your application that there is a clear business need to undertake the course.

This accredited short course, which will be taught at MSc standard, is one of the modules that comprise the MSc in Explosive Ordnance Engineering.
