About this course

Pre-ACSC focuses on the skills you will need for the Advanced Command and Staff Course.  It includes academic writing, critical thinking, presentation skills and leading and participating in seminars. You will be exposed to materials that compliment ACSC and be given the opportunity to familiarise yourself with English vocabulary around a wide range of topics such as politics and ideology, current affairs, social issues and military terminology. 

This course will enable you to build important relationships with fellow colleagues and embed yourself into UK military life prior to your arrival on ACSC.  You will also have the opportunity to go on external visits to places of military and cultural importance such as Winchester and Bath.

This is a 12-week course, starting in May each year. Talk to your UK Defence Attaché or IDT for closing dates.

You will learn/develop:
  • listening, speaking, reading and writing skills to NATO STANAG Level 3
  • academic writing
  • presentation and seminar skills
  • a wider understanding of international relations and current affairs
  • critical thinking

How will this course help my career?

This course is attended by a high number of the international students selected for the Advanced Command and Staff Course.  You will develop the skills necessary  to participate successfully on ACSC and be prepared for the academic rigours you will face.

Before you attend

You are expected to have IELTS  6  – 6.5  or equivalent

How will you be assessed?

You will be assessed using the NATO STANAG Level 3 language proficiency framework.
