About this course

This course is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of the Technology School, Defence Academy. 

This course has one intake per year: Mon 3 Sep 18.

The course offers a full time and flexible part time variant of the MSc, PgDip and PgCert programmes. Alternatively you can undertake up to 3 modules and bank the associated credits. Both variants are delivered by a combination of classroom-based lectures, workshops, exercises and electronic learning. The taught phase provides comprehensive coverage of modern systems engineering principles, practices, methods and tools, and places great emphasis on their practical application. In order to develop skills in understanding and tackling complex problems in the real world, extensive use of case studies and student investigation is used.

The majority of our industrial students are sponsored by their employers, who provide direct support to the course in the form of informal input to theses and provision of information to support coursework and projects.

There are two intakes per year; September and January.

Keeping courses up-to-date and current requires constant innovation and change. The modules currently offered in connection with this MSc reflect the needs of our business however they may change or be withdrawn due to research developments, legislation changes or for a variety of other reasons, depending on the year of entry. Changes may also be designed to improve the student learning experience or to respond to feedback from students, external examiners, accreditation bodies and industrial advisory panels.

How will this course help my career?

The course can help to improve your career prospects across a range of roles commensurate with your experience. This includes membership of multidisciplinary teams in acquisition, supply or research organisations. This could be in both general systems engineering roles or as a focal point for specific skills such as availability, reliability and maintenance (ARM), human factors, requirements, architecture test and evaluation, etc. It is also applicable to key roles in MOD acquisition such as project team leader, capability manager and requirements manager.

Before you attend

In order to attend the course, you are expected to have a 1st or 2nd class honours degree in an appropriate discipline, or equivalent, plus relevant postgraduate professional experience. If English is not your native language, you must attain an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.

If you are seeking a Ministry of Defence (MOD) funded place, you will need to demonstrate in your application that there is a clear business need to undertake the course.

How will you be assessed?

The course uses a range of assessment methods. You can expect to have:
  • assessed coursework for all modules 
  • three elements of assessment by group presentation and group portfolio (during Applied Systems Thinking, Systems Engineering Workshop and Advanced Systems Engineering Workshop).
If you are completing the MSc, the individual thesis also requires you to be assessed on your written presentation skills. The thesis assessment can include a viva voce requested at the discretion of the Examination Board.

This course is accredited formally by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) until 2018.
