The course explains why system safety management and a safety culture are important and the associated legal framework. It looks at the concepts of system safety engineering, the principle of as low as reasonably practical and managing risks. It covers safety cases, safety audits and safety governance and sequencing system safety activity in a project cycle. The course is set against a context of the MOD project environment but the principles have a wider applicability and are also suitable for members of safety committees as well as project teams. The course is an element of a mandated programme for MOD system safety practitioners leading to an International Institute of Safety Risk Management accreditation, but has wider relevance to non-MOD employees involved in the system safety aspects of projects.
System Safety Workshop Status
The System Safety training currently offered by the Defence Academy is now limited to e-learning courses only; System Safety In Action Online Training – SSIAOL, System Safety Process Management Online Training – SSPMOL and the System Safety Practitioner Online Training – SSPOL. These are still to be completed in order via the DLE and provide an excellent knowledge base of the subject.
New supporting face-to-face workshops are being sourced by the DE&S Sponsor, QSEP who hope to have a replacement delivery model in place by late summer 2019. As such, the practitioner certification exam cannot be undertaken until both online and face-to-face workshops have been completed. Exam will run Sep and Mar each year for those qualified to sit them.
