About this course

BMEC trains students to listen, speak, read and write military and general English. Although the course is not exam-focused, it aims to support student progression from their current NATO STANAG 6001 level to a higher level (SLP 1 to 2, or SLP  2 to 3).   

Alongside language training, students gain a wider understanding of British culture through classroom-based lessons and cultural trips.

What you will learn

You will learn/develop:
  • BMEC develops the English language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing up to the relevant STANAG proficiency level for the course
  • grammar 
  • military English vocabulary
  • war gaming 
  • preparing and participating in discussion and group presentations 

How will this course help my career?

The course attracts military personnel and civilian defence staff from across the globe; provides a platform on which international relationships can be built and is a great introduction to military life and culture in the UK.

Before you attend

Participants on the January course (SLP2-3) are expected to have IELTS  5 or equivalent. Participants on the September course (SLP1-2) are expected to have IELTS 4 or equivalent.

Talk to your UK Defence Attaché or IDT for application deadlines.

Can I attend this course?

This course is suitable for the following type(s) of applicant.

International participants only 

Attendees on this course are international military personnel and civilian defence staff who have been selected to attend the course and have been cleared to attend by one of the respective International Defence Training departments (IDTs).

How will you be assessed?

Students are assessed on completion of the course using the NATO STANAG 6001 language proficiency framework.
