About this course

You will develop the skills required to design engaging, effective and compelling Moodle-based learning on the Defence Learning Environment (DLE). Designing Online Learning Course (DOLC) training is mandated for all DLE Course Designers and those developing online learning within the DLE.

Completion of DLE Role Functionality Training (DLERFT) to Intermediate Level (DLEINT) is a pre-requisite, and must be completed before applying for the DOLC.

DLERFT gives you the technical skills to create learning on the DLE.

The DOLC spans 10 weeks – 1 day of which is face to face (F2F).  There are 4 weeks of pre-course Activities, then 1 day face to face, followed by 6 weeks of post-course Activity. Please see 'Details' tab for further information.

The pre-requisite DLEINT must be completed before applying for the DOLC.

Applicants are required to adhere to the pre-course work timings during the 4 week period prior to the Face to Face.  Failure to comply with this will result in removal from the DOLC. 

The course consists of:
  • 4 weeks pre-course work, which comprises of pre-course reading and activity
  • online DOLC pre-course activities approx. 6 hours (spread over 4 weeks) 
  • online DOLC pre-course reading covers the topics discussed during the DOLC face to face delivery
  • pre-course activity enables applicants time to work practically within the DLE
Course timetable:
4 weeks prior to F2F course:
  • students are enrolled on the DOLC DLE course where details of the pre-course work can be found 
  • the DOLC course can be found in the students “My courses” page on the DLE
4 weeks to 2 weeks prior to F2F course: 
  • students are required to complete the pre-reading and submit their pre-course work via the workshop activity
  • any student who has not submitted a course by the 2 week point will be removed from the course and their Line Manager will be informed
2 weeks to 1 week prior to F2F course: 
  • students are required to review 2 randomly allocated courses, via the workshop activity
1 week to F2F course: 
  • students are able to review the feedback provided for their pre-course work
Face to Face:
  • 1 day – 4 syndicate activities
  • commencement of post-course activity
6 weeks after F2F course:
  • submission of post-course activity

  • about the elements key to planning good or better online learning
  • how to assure and improve quality of DLE courses
  • accessibility in online learning

  • DLERFT must be completed before role permissions can be allocated on the DLE
  • a Certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course

Restrictions and security

Students must have access to and be familiar with the Defence Gateway prior to undertaking training.

All personnel across defence who are required to undertake DLE roles and develop online learning within the DLE.

How will you be assessed?

  • summative assessment will be carried out during the face to face part of the course.
  • formative assessment is carried out upon submission of the post-course activity.  
  • submission occurs 6 weeks after the DOLC face to face delivery.

  • The post-course activity is an extension of the pre-course activity – and enables applicants the ability to reinforce the learning undertaken during the pre-course and DOLC face to face delivery.
