About this module

As part of the Capability and Acquisition Series, this practitioner level module is open to all staff (military and civilian) who have a role as a requirements manager (RM). The module focuses on the understanding and application of tools and techniques and the principles of how to develop, deliver, test, analyse and manage robust requirements – which are themselves an essential element of delivering military capability to the frontline commands. 

What you will learn

This module will enable you to analyse and evaluate:
  • the role, activities, timing of activities and the responsibility of a RM within the different stages of the existing Requirements and Acceptance Process and how this output is used within the review and approval processes 
  • how to influence, detail, shape and communicate all aspects of requirement development / acceptance management activity
  • how utilising tools, techniques and approaches) to capture / develop both functional and non-functional requirements (including how to set priorities) to support informed decision making within Defence and capability trade off options 
  • the importance, utility and exploitation opportunities from the documentation, tools and techniques needed / available within the requirements and acceptance management process
  • why, where and how the acceptance activities and progressive acceptance need to be embedded and undertaken as an integral part of the requirement management process 
  • the RM’s role and interaction (inputs / outputs) with Cmd Capability staff, Delivery Agent and end user during the acquisition phase(s) of the programme / project lifecycle 

How will this module help my career?

This module will facilitate your progression to practitioner level understanding and application of requirements management tools and techniques that will enable you to carry out your role as a requirements manager more effectively.

The module is recognised as part of the military capability and acquisition FKSE (Functional Knowledge Skills and Experience) and is a prerequisite for a number of military posts. If you are a civil servant, the module will provide you with the key skills needed to undertake a job in the capability and acquisition arena. If you are an international student or from industry, the course will provide you with a working understanding of the process and lexicon the UK MOD use in the capability and acquisition arena.

How will you be assessed?

This module is summative; the assessment is provided by peer to peer feedback and debriefing in small groups.  The lecturers assess the feedback and brief to confirm learning.
