Defence Awarding Organisation (DAO)

The Defence Awarding Organisation (DAO) is an awarding body approved and regulated by the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) with authority to accredit courses onto the Qualification and Credit Framework (QCF). It provides the opportunity for Defence training delivery organisations to offer recognised qualifications.

The DAO enables Defence to continue to develop a strategic approach to accreditation by ensuring a close fit with external developments and coherence both within and across the Services, whilst minimising on the cost implications of so doing.  Recognising the level of the award, certificate or diploma will facilitate recognition of transferable skills into the civilian workforce upon military career termination.

The DAO, accredited Centres, courses, qualifications and all governance structures must comply with the Ofqual General Conditions of Recognition (GCR).  The application of JSP822 (DSAT) to all Defence Training enables compliance with this without additional requirements.

For Centres to be able to award DAO qualifications, they must first become an approved Centre and then gain accreditation for courses and qualifications.
