About this course

This course combines both the Listening Skills for Leaders course and the Understanding Loss and Bereavement course.  It is a brief, solution focused model of active listening and offers, in a very practical way the broad knowledge and basic practise of listening skills.

You will be encouraged to engage with your personal experiences of loss and bereavement and as a result this course can be quite emotionally challenging.

What you will learn
  • an understanding of listening in the wider context of communication skills
  • an awareness of the barriers that inhibit effective interaction
  • the art of active listening
  • the art of asking questions
  • how to end conversations appropriately
  • the processes, emotions and tasks of mourning
  • other forms of grief
  • to better understand the issues in dealing with bereavement and loss within the Services
  • to better understand funerals

The course is not assessed but day 4 will evidence the formative development of participants through role-play exercises using active listening skills in a range of scenarios.
