About this course

This short course is a module from the Defence Simulation and Modelling MSc. It is delivered by Cranfield University on behalf of the Technology School, Defence Academy.

The course deals with applications ranging from scientific visualisation to defence real-time interactive virtual environments and addresses issues in representation of 3D objects and the generation of terrain.  It addresses the fundamentals behind their design and operation, including the use of scene graphs, graphics libraries and relevant standards.

The course comprises a mixture of classroom instruction and hands-on practical work and examples in the Defence Academy Simulation and Synthetic Environment Laboratory (SSEL). Alternatively it may be possible to study the course by distance learning using the CDS VLE, which involves the completion of a package of on-line material.

What you will learn

You will learn/develop:
  • the basic techniques and processes underpinning modern 3D computer graphics
  • the range of techniques for representing and rendering 3D objects, scenes and virtual worlds
  • the issues in specifying, designing and implementing 3D graphic solutions
  • the role of both hardware and software in 3D graphics solutions
  • the selection and use of relevant content creation tools, graphics standards and software components and the workflow for integrating these into complete solutions
