A Strategic Leadership Programme (SLP) (Export) was delivered at the Fouad Shehab Command and Staff College, Beirut between 8 and 12 April 2019.
This was the first SLP delivered in Lebanon and comprised of a strong cohort, drawn from the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) (army, navy, air force) and the security sector (police and border security), as well as three delegates from the Greek Cypriot National Guard. The Defence Academy Of The United Kingdom delivery team consisted of Lieutenant Colonel Tim Taylor and Dr Ifti Zaidi and the course was delivered in English.
The delegates were very open about the state of the country, both nationally and regionally, and the level of debate throughout was both incisive and candid. The course was opened by the UK Defence Attaché, Lieutenant Colonel Alex Hilton and closed by His Excellency Chris Rampling, HM Ambassador to the Republic of Lebanon, who was also guest of honour at a reception held at the LAF Officers’ Club on the first evening of the SLP.
It was clear by the quality of delegates, the value that Lebanon (and Cyprus) has placed on this first delivery of the SLP in Beirut. The seniority and balance of military, security sector and Greek Cypriot National Guard attendees ensured that interaction and debate was based on a deep and broad foundation of leadership and professional experience. The candid nature of debate on the state of the nation and region also supported a rich and highly successful intercourse throughout.
