Mr Jerry Nowers, Acting Principal Lecturer of the Defence Engagement School, was Lead Facilitator on the recent Language Standards and Assessment Seminar, held in the Partner Language Training Center, Europe (PLTCE), in Garmisch, Germany, 1–12 Jul 19.

The aim of the Language Standards and Assessment Seminar (LSAS) is to familiarise teachers and programme managers with NATO’s STANAG 6001, on language proficiency levels for the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  To provide guidelines for aligning language instruction to the NATO standards. To foster assessment literacy, including knowledge of sound testing principles and basic concepts of statistical analysis, and to enable teachers and managers to develop and administer valid and reliable classroom assessments. It is held twice a year.

On behalf of NATO’s Bureau for International Language Coordination (BILC – NATO’s language advisory body), Director PLTCE, Mr Keith Wert said:

‘We are very grateful to Mr Nowers’ chain of command in the UK Defence Academy’s Advanced Faculty for again allowing him to lead on this course. It is his 10th with us here. He helped to develop the LSAS in early 2013, and his experience and expertise are vital enablers, and the feedback on the course is always extremely positive.

Since 2013, we have seen some 140 course personnel from different nations participating. They come not only from NATO nations, but also NATO’s affiliated partnerships, including the Mediterranean Dialogue, so we regard this as vital Defence Engagement activity on behalf of NATO.’
