Defence Academy's Eagle Owl team swoop a 21-10 victory

The Defence Academy's Owls scored a decisive 21-10 win over their Kansas counterparts yesterday in the first of two friendly rugby games.

It was a hard won victory for the Owls, playing in high temperatures and humidity, with Kansas City RFC pushing the UK students hard in the last quarter to try and snatch back a home win. However, the Owls held on - albeit with a little confusion over the correct lines on an American football pitch - with tries scored by Major Matt Fyjis-Walker (2 tries), and a third by Defence Academy instructor Major Gareth Davies.

All three conversions were made by Major David Lambert.

Over 200 Army Division students on ICSC(L) are over in Kansas for Exercise Eagle Owl, a joint training exercise with the Americans following last week’s Exercise Hawk Owl in the UK with Danish Officers.

Outside of the training programme, the students and staff have organised a number of events with their American hosts. Next week they are due to take on Topeka RFC before they return back to the UK.
