Officer Cadet (OCdt) Callum Hunter joined 174 competitors in this year’s Combined Services Equestrian Championships, to win his first ever show jumping competition.

Split into nine Individual Jumping classes’, Callum and his horse ‘Sonny’ completed the first 80cm class with only two fences down and four time faults, totalling a score of 12 faults.  OCdt Hunter said:

“I wasn’t sure of what to expect.  As we went to the Outdoor Arena to warm up I was rather nervous, but I started to feel better as we went through our paces.”

The second round was the 90cm class, while the final class was the Novice Team event where OCdt Hunter was paired with Major (Maj) Judith Lilley, a reservist from the QARNNS, and Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) Judith Brocklehurst from the Royal Navy.

As the penultimate team to ride, Lt Cdr Brocklehurst went first with only one pole down; OCdt Hunter had a quick second round and last to ride was Maj Lilley, who had a clear round putting them into first place with 9 faults. OCdt Hunter said:

“In all it was a great day for the team as we were able put out a full team to compete well against all the regular units and also it was a great day for me as I was able to bring home a 1st rosette from my first ever show jumping competition”.

OCdt Hunter is currently at Aston University and is due to join RAF Cranwell for Initial Officer Training in 2018.
