Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context contributes to UK Support in Ukraine

Defence Academy deliver ‘Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context (MDWSC) Ukraine’.

Last week, international section and Cranfield University delivered ‘Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context (MDWSC) Ukraine’ in support of the British Defence Section and the UK Special Defence Advisor (SDA), Mrs Lynda Smith, in their assistance to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.  These took the form of two, 2 day workshops in Kyiv and Odesa.  

The Kyiv workshop saw 11 participants from the Ukrainian Army logistics organisation engage with Defence transformation, capability, benefits, sustainability and planning for change.  

The Odesa workshop saw 21 participants from the Ukrainian Navy, including their 2* Chief of Staff, engage with security sector transformation, risk theory and perception, crisis management and planning for change. 

These workshops were well received by the participants, scoring 4.5 and 4.6 out of 5 respectively on the internal validation. Their comments included: 

“Very happy. Thank you for organising this course.” 

“Well organised course and discussions.” 

“Good theory and lecture, helped to grasp the theory.” 

“Great that a course of this kind exists!”

The SDA, Mrs Lynda Smith said:

“These Defence Academy workshops are a very valuable aspect of the UK’s support to the ongoing development and transformation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.”

The delivery team was Professor Laura Cleary, Mr John McCormack and Mrs Edith Wilkinson from Cranfield University, and Lt Col Jon Dowd RM from International Section (Senior Faculty).
