VIP speakers share insights with international delegates of the Defence Academy's Senior Strategic Leadership Programme

Senior current and former military leaders and Members of Parliament (MPs) spoke to 120 delegates from 40 countries during the recent virtual Senior Strategic Leadership Programme (SSLP) at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.

Featuring high profile guest speakers from politics, academia and defence, SSLP aims to enhance strategic leadership and management at both the corporate and strategic level across defence and the wider security sector in prioritised countries.

The speakers provided personal insights on the dynamic relationship between policy and strategy and the leadership challenges of implementing strategy in the volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous contemporary security environment.

Speakers included:

  • General Sir Patrick Sanders – Commander STRATCOM
  • General David Petraeus (former US commander ISAF) and Dr Bryan Watters (Cranfield University)
  • Lord George Robertson – former NATO Secretary General and UK Defence Secretary
  • James Heappey MP – Minister for the Armed Forces
  • Rt Hon Tobias Ellwood MP (Chair House of Commons Defence Select Committee) and Rt Hon John Spellar MP (Vice Chairman of HCDC)

The SSLP usually takes place over five days at Beckett House, but was adapted into a two-day online seminar via MS Teams. With Covid mitigation measures remaining in place across our campus throughout summer, this is just one example of how Defence Academy educators continue to find innovative ways of delivering high quality professional defence and security education to delegates both in the UK and overseas.

Lieutenant Colonel Saskia Hart explained, “In the absence of the traditional SSLP residential course, this virtual event provided a unique opportunity for participants to hear from selected strategic leaders and academics exploring the challenges and realities of operating in the strategic environment.”

Delegates ranking from OF3 to 3* and civilian equivalent attended SSLP from the following countries: South Korea, Chile, Georgia, Ghana, Ireland, Cyprus, Nepal, Chile, Montenegro, Thailand, Brazil, Canada, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Philippines, Argentina, Guinea, Paraguay, Iraq, Albania, Uruguay, Jamaica, Guatemala, Palestine, Kosovo, Morocco, Norway, India, Sri Lanka, Ukraine, Lethoso, Gambia, Ethiopia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Mozambique, Nigeria, New Zealand, Libya, UK.
