The New Year has seen the arrival of a new Principal at Welbeck The Defence Sixth Form College.
Howard Blackett’s arrival has coincided with the start of the new term which has already thrown up many challenges! Howard will steer the college through the last six months of the final year, before it closes the gates for good as the defence STEM Sixth Form College in July 2021.
Educated first at St Edward’s School, Oxford, Howard then went on to university to study geography at Christ Church, Oxford. Following a brief spell in the Royal Navy, (basic officer training at BRNC Dartmouth and service in HMS Illustrious), he embarked upon a career in independent education. Howard has spent 22 years in headship roles at Dover College, The Royal Hospital School and most recently at The Peterhouse Group of Schools in Zimbabwe. He has routinely served on various educational committees and working groups in both the UK and Africa. Howard is married (to Susie) and has three grown up children. He has a lifelong interest is music (choral and instrumental) and sport (having played rugby and hockey at first class level) and has an MBA in Educational Leadership (International).
Howard said of his arrival:
“I am delighted to have joined the team at Welbeck and it is unfortunate that Covid-19 has meant I’ve not been able to meet everyone in person. I am determined to ensure that the last 6 months of the college’s life are as productive and positive as possible for both students and staff and memorable, Covid permitting, for all the right reasons.”
