During January 2009, 120 Officer Cadets undergoing initial officer training at RAF College Cranwell have attended a 'Care in Leadership' course at the AFCC, Amport House.
This is part of a rolling programme whereby all those training to be RAF officers take time to consider the welfare and pastoral issues they will face as junior commanders in the RAF.
The course, jointly taught by AFCC DS and chaplains from RAF Cranwell, includes sessions on bereavement and loss, ‘kinforming’, good listening and confidentiality. It culminates in real life role play scenarios using professional actors when the cadets get to practice what they have hopefully learned! According to the cadets, the setting and ethos of Amport House seems to add significant value to what is taught, with some reporting it as one of the most beneficial parts of their training.
