The Hobson Library in the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) was created in 1997 when it inherited most of its stock from the four single service staff colleges from which the JSCSC was formed. The Hobson Library is now the single largest defence library in the UK, with a significant collection of books and other materials, including a wide range of print and online journals, audio-visual material, as well as access to thousands of electronic resources.
The collection also includes archives from the Army Staff College, Camberley, and the Royal Air Force Staff College, Bracknell. Highlights from the archives include official documents, staff rides, photographs, service lists, doctrine publications, and other official manuals, as well as some rare and valuable books.
Although the stock belongs to the MOD, the library is managed by Serco Group Plc under a private finance initiative contract. Library staff are available to answer enquiries between 0800-1800 Monday-Friday.
Access to the Hobson Library is by prior permission only and may be restricted due to course commitments or security considerations. Visits may be made to use the library’s material for research purposes and can be requested by contacting the library.
