About this course

Delivered by the Defence Centre for Training Support (DCTS), this course is the highest level course in the Defence Trainer Capability Pathway. This course is specifically for those in a defence trainer manager role, and is not a Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT) awareness or DSAT Manager's course. The 'Defence Systems Approach to Training eLearning v1.0' on the Defence Learning Environment (DLE) will provide students with an overview of the DSAT process.

Once application capacity for a singular course iteration has been reached, these course dates will be removed from the 'Planned dates' box. What you will learn

You will learn how the Defence Trainer Manager (DTM) is the highest level of assurance/qualification in the defence trainer capability. They are responsible for advising the chain of command on the implementation of this direction and other defence training and education policies. They act as the functional managers of the DTSs in a training establishment or on a unit and will oversee trainer-specific continuing professional development. The DTM role is an advanced role in the delivery of DSAT. They are also the lead for continuous improvement (CI) relating to the Defence Trainer Course. They will not be expected to duplicate the role of the DTS. Where a unit is so small that there is no individual suitable to act as a DTM, Front Line Commands (FLC) may nominate other suitably qualified and experience personnel outside that unit to undertake the role.

How this course will help your career

This course will provide students the knowledge required to conduct the four core DTM tasks as outlined in Joint Service Publication 822:

  • advising the chain of command on and ensuring the implementation of DTC direction
  • functional management of DTS
  • supporting the professional development of training delivery staff through the management of mandatory workplace training for defence trainers and DTS and coordination of trainer-specific CPD
  • quality assurance and maintenance of training delivery standards through the implementation of unit self-assessment relating to the unit's system for managing defence trainers and DTS and the promotion of good practice

Evidence required: Evidence of unit risk (training will be cancelled or reduced. Safety could be compromised). In addition, assignment order/detachment notice and/or extract from TORs.

Current role requirement

Contained within student justification. Line manager agreement (Training Officer or OF3/C2). Evidence required: Assignment order and/or extract TORs required and Navy Training Managers in phase 2 training.

Professional, branch or trade requirement or promotion

Contained within student justification. Line manager agreement (OF3/C2). Evidence required: Identifying courses for future roles within your profession, branch or trade but not currently your primary role or promotion board requirement.

Cover of short-term gap

Contained within student justification. Line manager agreement (OF3/C2). Evidence required: Not your primary role but fulfilling an additional requirement due to gapped post.

Other reason

Contained within student justification. Line manager agreement (SNCO). Reason for application (e.g. professional development, interest, future planning).

Notes for unit justification:

  1. OF3/C2 contact and detail outlining the situation with numbers of posts, filled/gapped and how many of the filled ones are not yet qualified.
  2. Extracts of Customer Executive Board (including working groups) records of decision.
  3. Extracts from the commander's risk assessment or self-assessment report, or other formal staff product which notes the risk (risk register, etc.)
