About this course

This course examines defence information policy, governance frameworks and assurance requirements, and how these are applied to manage, protect and exploit information responsibly across organisations.

It will prepare you to:

•    oversee organisational knowledge and information management (KIM) activity
•    lead local KIM processes
•    advise senior leaders
•    support the governance, assurance and exploitation of defence information across their areas of responsibility

•    how to implement KIM strategy within an organisation 
•    approaches to managing information risk, compliance and assurance activities 
•    the principles of information architecture, classification and information handling

•    how to lead and coordinate KIM activities across a unit or organisation 
•    how to direct and support assistant information managers, information support officers and information support assistants

How this course will help your career

This course is aligned with the information manager role description in JSP 441 and is designed for personnel preparing for, or undertaking, information manager responsibilities within defence.

It will developyour knowledge and skills to oversee organisational KIM activity, support governance and assurance processes, and advise leaders on the effective management and exploitation of information.

You will gain a strategic perspective needed to implement effective information management across an organisation. It will also provide useful preparation for those who may later undertake senior information officer responsibilities.

Before you attend

You are required to complete KIM Fundamentals on the Defence Learning Environment. 

Previous qualification, training or practical experience in information management, including courses such as Information Support Assistant or Information Support Officer, is beneficial but not essential.

How you will be assessed

There is formative assessment throughout the course. Both individual and team activities take place during the week, culminating in a team presentation.

On successful completion you will receive the Information Manager course certificate.

Military personnel will be awarded the IMgr competence on JPA. Civil servants may record the qualification on their MyHR training record
