The course is the first in a series of 3 modules which together make up the Intermediate Officer Development Programme. Officers are required to complete IOD A prior to promotion to sqn ldr and then complete IOD B and C after a period in rank as an OF3. The programme is accredited with the Institute of Leadership and Management and attracts credits from Staffordshire University against a range of courses at masters’ level (Level 7).

The course is a single Service requirement for promotion to Sqn Ldr and candidates will not normally be given substantive rank without having completed IOD-A.

The course is designed for RAF officers of all professions and aligns with the RAF officer development requirements outlined in the Generic Performance Statement. Officers of other nations may be able to attend if approved by Director, RAF Division, in consultation with Air Career Management.
Course content will mostly be at no higher than OFFICIAL SENSITIVE classification, but some elements may include SECRET material. Course members from other nations may be able to attend with the caveat that they will not be permitted to attend any sessions which include SECRET material.
Course content will be suitable for 5 EYES audience and most subject matter will be suitable for non-5 EYES Coalition partners, although some elements may include UK SECRET Rel UK Eyes Only material.
Course pre-requisites are completed via the Defence Learning Environment (DLE) in the 4 months prior to attending the residential element of the course. Course members are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of the core air power roles, leadership models and of historical examples of these, and be familiar with the MIOT syllabus outcomes.
Course members are assessed formatively only on written and verbal communications and on their critical thinking skills, and contribution to leadership exercises and group planning tasks.
