About this course

This online course provides the knowledge needed to contribute to effective records management (RM) within defence organisations. You will explore how to organise, maintain and govern records, apply relevant legislation and policy, and support compliance with statutory and organisational requirements.

What you will learn

The course explores the responsibilities of records managers, including:
 UK information legislation, including the Public Records Act, Data Protection Legislation, and the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) Section 46 Code of Practice
•    the records lifecycle from creation and organisation through to retention, disposal and permanent preservation
•    the development and management of file plans, naming conventions and retention schedules
•    digital/physical record keeping practices
•    sensitivity review processes and RM governance requirements
•    the role of effective RM policies and procedures within defence organisations

How this course will help your career

This course develops your understanding of RM within the defence information environment and provides the knowledge needed to support effective recordkeeping, governance and compliance within your organisation.

It is highly recommended to complete the RM course before attending ISA, and it may be helpful for other knowledge and information management (KIM) training.

Before you attend

You should ensure that any mandatory data protection, information management and records management awareness training required by defence policy is in date prior to attendance.

Completion of the KIM Fundamentals course on the Defence Learning Environment (DLE) is required before attending this course.

How you will be assessed

There are formative questions, exercises and knowledge checks throughout. 

You will need to demonstrate foundation level understanding to receive the RM course certificate.

Military personnel will be awarded the RM competence on JPA. Civil servants may record the qualification on their MyHR training record.

The certificate/competence may be required for other KIM courses.
