About this course

This is an online course designed to prepare you for the senior information officer (SIO) role. 

The course will prepare you to lead organisational knowledge and information management (KIM) activity, oversee information governance and assurance functions, and provide senior level direction to KIM practitioners to ensure defence information is used effectively and responsibly.

What you will learn

You will learn/develop:

•    an understanding of defence information policy, governance and assurance requirements 
•    how organisational KIM strategies, information directives and information asset management approaches are developed, implemented and monitored
•    approaches to managing information risk, compliance and assurance at organisational level 
•    how information management supports organisational and operational objectives 
•    the leadership responsibilities of the SIO role 
•    how to direct and oversee information managers and wider KIM practitioners 
•    how to promote effective information behaviours and collaborative working across an organisation 
•    how to provide senior leadership with assurance on the effective management and exploitation of information
•    management approaches are developed, implemented and monitored

How this course will help your career

This course is aligned with SIO role profile in JSP 441 and supports personnel undertaking senior leadership responsibilities for organisational information management within defence.

It is best suited to personnel appointed to, or preparing for, a SIO position, who will be responsible for directing, assuring and improving information management across a defence unit or organisation.

You must have access to Modnet and Microsoft Teams.

Before you attend

Your mandatory training in data protection, information management and records management should be in-date prior to attendance.

You are required to complete the KIM Fundamentals on the Defence Learning Environment (DLE). 

Completion of the Information Advantage Awareness course on the DLE is also required prior to attendance, as it provides important context for information exploitation at senior level.

MOD civil servants are required to familiarise themselves with Joint Service Publication 441 - Defence Information Management Policy and its associated information management protocols. 

Prior qualification and experience in KIM roles for example, information manager is helpful but not required.

How you will be assessed

There is formative assessment throughout the course.

You will need to demonstrate a strong understanding of information management principles, governance and assurance responsibilities.

On successful completion you will receive the Senior Information Officer course certificate.

Military personnel will be awarded the SIO competence on JPA. Civil servants may record the qualification on their MyHR training record.
