The Defence Academy recently welcomed back members of last year’s Advanced Command and Staff Course 27, who were attending King’s College London’s Defence Studies Department graduation ceremony.

Presiding over the event from King’s was the Right Honorable Lord Stevens of Birmingham, Chair of Council. He offered heartfelt congratulations to the graduates, noting that they were about to join an international community of King’s alumni - “a peer group and network spanning just about every discipline, career and nation around the world.”
Reflecting on the day, Commander Emma Sloley (MA Defence Studies, Pass with Merit) said:

“Being reunited with so many friends and colleagues to celebrate our graduation day made it a very special occasion. It gave the opportunity to take time out of busy day jobs to collectively reflect on the hard work put in and the successes achieved, enabling both personal and professional development. When Director, Joint Services Command and Staff College, Air Commodore Ian Sharrocks spoke, he quoted Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, who said: ‘Sweat saves blood; blood saves lives; but brains saves both’ – in a world of increasing insecurity where nothing can be taken for granted, now before me lies the challenge of using my education to the best possible effect in defence.”

ACSC course members can undertake one of three MA pathways in conjunction with their ACSC studies. These pathways are:

  • Master’s of Arts in Defence Studies
  • Master’s Research in Defence Studies
  • Master’s of Science in Defence Innovation

The King’s Defence Studies Department (DSD) is part of the School of Security Studies and provides academic support to the delivery of professional military education (PME). It was created in 1997 as an integral part of JSCSC, to provide world-class command and staff training.
