The Defence Academy of the United Kingdom has played a pivotal role in strengthening international defence ties through a landmark collaboration with the Gambian Armed Forces (GAF).

Led by Major Mark Polglase from the Learning Capability and Development (LCaD) Group, a British Armed Forces Short Term Training Team (STTT), delivered an intensive Operational Planning Course at the GAF Training School in Fajara, from 6 – 28 October.
The course brought together 20 officers from the Gambian Army, Navy, and National Guard. Participants were introduced to the British strategic planning process (the Combat Estimate), alongside modules on ethical leadership and effective communication, all essential competencies for modern military leaders. The training combined classroom instruction with practical exercises tailored to Gambian operational realities.

Lieutenant Colonel Gary Wolfenden, Officer Commanding the British Peace Support Team in West Africa, commended the professionalism of the Gambian participants:
“This course is a testament to the enduring partnership between our two nations. The commitment shown by the Gambian Armed Forces to professional development is inspiring, and we are proud to support their journey.”
Brigadier General Sait Njie, Commander of the Gambian Armed Forces, highlighted the course’s strategic importance:
“This training could not have come at a better time. It has equipped our officers with vital tools for operational planning and strengthened our capacity to address evolving security challenges.”
The Commandant of the Gambian Armed Forces Training Centre, Major Secka expressed gratitude for the Defence Academy-led team:
“I would like to thank Major Polglase and his instructors for their dedication and professionalism. Their depth of knowledge and attention to detail ensured the course achieved its objectives.”
This initiative forms part of the UK’s broader Defence Engagement strategy in West Africa, aimed at promoting regional stability through professional military education and institutional development. The course focused on strategic planning, ethical leadership, and effective communication, equipping Gambian officers with the tools to tackle conventional and asymmetric threats.

The success of this programme has already sparked discussions on future iterations and expanded modules, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to building resilient, capable armed forces across West Africa. The course concluded with a formal graduation ceremony attended by senior military and diplomatic figures, underscoring the shared purpose and mutual respect that define this partnership.
