A to-scale model of a stealthy nano drone, currently being used by Ukrainian forces, has landed at the Defence College for Military Capability Integration (DCMCI).

The Black Hornet 3 is an airborne personal reconnaissance system for dismounted soldiers.  Designed and manufactured by Teledyne FLIR, the Black Hornet 3 can be operated by non-specialist soldiers, and offers the same immediate convert situational awareness, and threat location capabilities, as a larger unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). It has a flight time of over 20 minutes and is near silent.

Gifted by Teledyne FLIR, the combat-proven drone will join an impressive collection of UAVs in the Technology Hub, to be used as a powerful training aid for Autonomous Systems and Sensors.

Andy Lambert, Senior Executive Officer Technology Hub said:

“The delivery of the Black Hornet 3 would not have been possible without the close relationship between DCMCI and industry partners. Adding to our existing UAVs ecosystem, the Black Hornet 3 will provide interactive and immersive experiences for our students on autonomous systems and realistic reconnaissance simulations.”

The Technology Hub, located in DCMCI, comprises of multi-domain integration focus areas and zones. This includes a substantial display of contemporary and historical military platforms from multiple nations (including from NATO allies), capabilities, technologies and equipment. The exhibits are integral to DCMCI’s learning offer, providing students with an enhanced learning and research experience.
